First Signs: The first medical observations of Wireless Stress Syndrome (WSS) came in 2002. In September of that year, 30,000 European physicians and medical practitioners issued a world-wide alert regarding the possible health impacts from the use of wireless and other mobile technologies. The Freiburger Appeal identified a cluster of symptoms, disorders and diseases that had exploded in their patient populations such as sleep disturbances, memory loss, concentration issues, agitation, unexplained fatigue; ADD, cancers, brain diseases and others unexplained health impacts. These medical experts were among the first to link this cluster of diseases and disorders to microwave emissions of wireless and mobile technologies such as cell phones, WiFi, cell towers, pagers and cordless phones.
Wireless Health Alert: On August 31, 2007 a 600 page landmark study titled the BioInitiative Report: A Rationale for a Biologically-based Public Exposure Standard for Electromagnetic Fields (PDF) http://www.bioinitiative.org was released worldwide. This study, which draws from more than two thousand independent scientific papers, outlines the bioeffects and burgeoning public health threat from wireless technologies. The impressive international group of fifteen experts in the area of radio frequency (RF) research came together to publish this study, which links microwave signals from wireless technologies to more than fifty bioeffects in humans that are silently affecting us all. These health impacts include brain and breast cancer, childhood leukemia, neurological impacts, immune system dysfunction, Alzheimer’s, depression, memory loss, autism and sleep disturbances. The BioInitiative report concludes, "the current level of exposure to the general population is thousands of times too high."
Wireless Stress Syndrome (WSS) has since spread to most industrialized countries. In Sweden, which is among the leaders in adoption of wireless technologies, a more serious form of WSS is exploding. Between 2.5 and 3% of the Swedish population (230-290,000 people) is now is reporting disabilities, resulting from exposures to microwaves, following the initial symptoms of Wireless Stress Syndrome (WSS) listed above. The Swedes call it electro-sensitivity (ES).
EU and German Government Warnings: In September, Professor Jacqueline McGlade, Executive Director of the European Environmental Agency (EEA), warned: "Recent research and reviews on the long-term effects of radiations from mobile telecommunications suggest that it would be prudent for health authorities to recommend actions to reduce exposures, especially to vulnerable groups, such as children." According to the New Zealand Herald, "the EEA's initiative will increase pressure on governments and public health bodies to take precautionary action over the electromagnetic radiation from rapidly expanding new technologies. The German government is already advising its citizens to use wired internet connections instead of Wi-Fi and landlines instead of mobile phones."
Microwaves from Wireless Devices: Cause and Effect
More than two dozen bio-effects from low-level exposures to wireless technologies are being reported in the scientific literature. Here’s a sampling of those most strongly supported:
| Bio-effect: Wireless Impact on Humans | Observed Effect: Disease/ Symptoms |
| Calcium Efflux (Ca+ ions ejected from cells) | Heart disease, strokes, Alzheimer’s |
| Pineal Gland disruption - Melatonin regulation | Number one cancer defense disabled |
| Pineal Gland disruption – Serotonin regulation | Attitude and mood swings; depression |
| DNA/ Chromosome Damage | Pre-cancerous cell clusters formed; |
| DNA/ Chromosome Damage | Free-radical production; cell oxygenation |
| Rise in Triglycerides | Increase cholesterol; heart attacks, strokes |
| Promotes rapid cell growth | Promotes both malignant and benign growth |
| Permeates Blood Brain Barrier | Allows toxins to flow into brain cavity causing mental confusion, memory loss and disease |
| Interferes with Hippocampus Function | Disrupts memory and cognitive function, slows reactions/ thinking |
| Promotes release of Stress Proteins (HSP) | Imposes significant stress on immune system, possibly causing autoimmune diseases |
What you can do:
- Turn off all wireless devices at night (wireless router, cordless phone, cell phone, microwave, wireless computers and peripherals.
- Reduce cell phone usage and use speaker phone if possible. Also keep cell phone away from head when making and receiving calls.
- Do not use Bluetooth headsets.
- Restrict children under 18 from using a cell phone (unless it is an emergency). Keep these phones off unless necessary.
- Restrict all WiFi at schools, libraries and public places. There are many wired Internet alternatives.
- Exchange your home-based wireless router for "wall-plugged Ethernet switches."
